VitaMix 5200 Blender Review – First Impressions

VitaMix LogoThe eagle has landed.

Yes, my VitaMix 5200 blender arrived today via UPS and my green smoothie adventure finally begins. I made the decision to shift a substantial part of my diet over to raw foods this year, and the 5200 is going to be my weapon of choice.

Sporting a custom Swedish-built 2 HP motor, the VitaMix 5200 is a workhorse of a blender. It features a variable speed control system that provides consistent power regardless of load, and the available speeds range from 11 MPH to 240 MPH. But enough of the technical details for now, I’m dying to get this thing open!

After cracking open the box, I’m greeted by a welcome note from the friendly folks at Vita-Mix…

After pulling off the top layer of styrofoam, I catch my very first glimpse of the shiny new 5200. It was love at first sight…

After reaching down to pull the blender out of the box, I could immediately tell that this thing is built like a tank. It’s extremely heavy and feels very solid. I can also tell that the included Eastman Tritan copolyester 64 oz. container is going to be extremely durable — the entire unit is definitely built to last.

As far as being user-friendly goes, I don’t think it gets much better than this. While most of the blenders out there today feature cluttered interfaces with far too many knobs and settings, the VitaMix 5200’s layout is a breath of fresh air. On the far right is the on/off switch, the far left button features High and Variable settings, and the middle knob allows the user to adjust the variable speed. Straight forward and simple — I like it.

Last but not least, VitaMix also includes a few cookbooks and a DVD. I’ll look through these later as I’m anxious to make my first smoothie. Stay tuned…
